Exercise For Senior Citizens

Controlled and moderate exercise can and should be performed by toddlers all the way up to senior citizens. If you're a senior who has led a sedentary lifestyle for many years, and you wish to begin an exercise program, it is strongly recommended that you get clearance from your doctor before beginning. Depending on your current physical condition, you may get a complete go-ahead from your doctor or it may be a conditional one. An example of a conditional go-ahead is that if you have diabetes, you may be told to check your blood sugar after each workout. Another example is that if you have osteoporosis, you may be told to just swim or use a stationary bike rather than getting into any program that has a higher level of intensity.

Assuming that you receive your doctor's clearance, it's important to choose one or more exercise regimens that are moderate in nature and you would enjoy doing day after day.

There are a number of moderate exercises that you can choose from, to include: walking, slow dancing, swimming, tennis (doubles), rebounding, treadmill, stationary bike, light weight lifting, resistance training, stretching, balancing, aerobics, and golf.

Many studies have confirmed that seniors who exercise on a daily basis can lower the risk of old age frailty, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.

So what are you waiting for! Get off the couch, and start your personalized daily exercise program. You may be amazed at the results you see and feel in a relatively short period of time - a few weeks to a couple of months. But don't stop there - make exercise a part of your daily schedule for the rest of your life.
